Changes in my Practice - Week 32

Changes in my practice - reflecting on my personal journey
Throughout my Mindlab journey I have faced many challenges.  I have at times found it extremely difficult to manage as it has been a very long time since I have undertaken any form of study and I often doubted my abilities as a learner.  As I have moved through my journey I have realised that I am a continual learner and this has been particularly true over the last 3 years as I have entered into the e-learning journey and become a successful teacher in a 1:1 digital classroom.

Osterman and Kottkamp (1993) has contrasted the traditional approach of professional development by outside experts delivering workshops for schools versus reflective practice model. They suggest that traditional approach results in knowledge acquisition while reflective practice can lead to change in behaviours via self-awareness.

PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND PROFESSIONAL VALUES:

Practicing Teacher Criterion 4 states  as teachers we must "demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning and development of personal professional practice"
Mindlab has been a major catalyst for me this year. The continual reflective practice as discussed by Osterman and Kottkamp has been consistently at the forefront of my Leadership and professional development.  Within my classroom and my teaching we now use 1:1 digital devices on a daily basis as a regular part of our learning.  This has been one key change for me in my teaching practice.  I am learning with the students in many respects as we explore new apps for how we can present our learning but also offering support and guidance as I provide stimulating and exciting digital learning opportunities for my students.  We now use a great deal more collaboration between students, this is on many levels, not just within our class but we collaborate with other students nation wide.

PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN PRACTICE

Fully certificated teachers make use of their professional knowledge and understanding to build a stimulating, challenging and supportive learning environment that promotes learning and success for all ākonga.
6. conceptualise, plan and implement an appropriate learning programme
7. promote a collaborative, inclusive and supportive learning environment
The other key change I have had within my practice in a digital classroom is the introduction and continual reflection on students being cyber safe and cyber smart.  This is something that need to be in the forefront of my teaching and delivery of a digital curriculum as there are always situations that could potential arise, especially through the use of social media platforms which we now use on a regular basis.

My future Professional Development is something I have been reflecting on lately.  I have been giving some consideration as to carrying on with my Unitec journey and working towards another 60 credits to have a Postgrad Diploma.  I am unsure of the direction that this may take as yet but I would like to continue along the e-learning track as this is the way of my teaching future.  I will take some time over the summer to investigate avenues and courses and what this may look like for me.

Digital - Blended Learning Flipped Learning - discussions around it.  Do they have a device?  Can they access the learning at home?  How do we ensure the students do the flipped learning before hand?  Flipped learning means nothing other than the complete redesigning of the learning to take place.  Flipped does not have to be digital.  The difference is the way in which you design the intervention.  There is a wide difference in understanding on what the students understand from the task. Week 5 - 19 April 2017 Digital - Computational Thinking Computational Thinking   Means... Solving problems Applying abstraction and decomposition Thinking algorithmically - what’s the process? Thinking conceptually - what’s the model? Understanding how things repeat and scale Dealing with errors ...among other things (depends who you read) Computational thinking is a way humans solve problems; it is not trying to get humans to think like computers. Computational thinking is taakin an approach to solve problems Computational thinking means... Decomposition - breaking down data, processes or problems into smaller manageable parts Pattern recognition - observing patterns, trends  Abstraction - Identifying the general principle Algorithm Design- Developing the step by step instructions to solve this and similar problems Apply recipe(algorhythm) to solve problems.  Strategies solve problems Coding is the universal language of this generation.
